Mortal Kombat 4 cut scenes you can’t watch without laughing
Let me begin this by stating that I played and thoroughly enjoyed an absolute ton of Mortal Kombat 4 back in the day. As great as the franchise’s first ventures into three dimensional combat may seemed been for pre-teen me, it’s not a title that aged all that well. Mortal Kombat 4 cut scenes are amazing.
NetherRealm Studios now boasts a particularly lofty status in the fighting game world, and that’s because of innovation and decades of confident ventures. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, however, and a hilarious review of some of MK4’s worst (best) cut scenes by VidoeGameDunkey shows us why this 1997 entry is remembered more as a swing and a miss these days.

Dunkey’s video drips with sarcasm as he points out the various follies and extremely questionable decisions the team at Midway decided to go with to unfold the stories of the game’s various characters. Many are already aware of the bare-bones floating island ending sequences featuring Sonya, Jax, and Jarek, but many other cut scenes in the game left even 10 year olds like me scratching our heads over these Mortal Kombat 4 cut scenes.
From seemingly random sound bits that appear just not to have been edited out to jarringly unexplained and sudden character appearances, one would not expect the Mortal Kombat franchise to become the golden standard in fighting game story telling.
Especially with Dunkey’s commentary, it feels all but impossible not to start laughing during these absurd and poorly executed scenes. We should mention that the team definitely upgraded the visuals of many of these in the 1999 Mortal Kombat Gold update, but we still spent two whole years watching these “wtf” moments every time we beat the game and saw those Mortal Kombat 4 cut scenes.
